Spoke at the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) conference in Salt Lake City with June Vining. She is the executive director of Trauma Intervention Program(TIP) in Portland/Vancouver. The theme was "Victim to Victorious". It was a great week of meeting wonderful people who do difficult and emotional work- helping victims.

New York and New Jersey tour

Signing books at the Hard Rock Cafe in the Bronx at a Million Mom March/ New Yorkers Against Gun Violence victims dinner. It was a moving tear filled night. Lot's of amazing stories. I'm grateful for being invited to speak and be a part of such an important night.

Duluth and Minneapolis tour

Columbine Memorial Service Speech

I spoke for 3 minutes at the Columbine memorial on April 20, 2009. Just before my speech, the daughter of one of the Columbine victims was talking about her mother. She said her mom was "still on day one" in terms of recovering and moving on from what happened at Columbine. So much pain - even 10 years later.

Denver State Capitol

As we walked to the State Capitol in Denver for the memorial I noticed the flags at half mast and the blue Columbine ribbon on the building. It took my breath away because it was the first really visible symbol of the anniversary for me.

One of the best things about a sad day in Denver was reconnecting with some of the people from The Brady Campaign, many of whom were personally impacted by the Virginia Tech shooting two years ago.

Columbine 10-year memorial trip

It was really tough to speak at the memorial service. Right before I spoke, I told Dave Sanders' daughter how much he'd influenced me and it was emotional for me - especially those first few moments. The lie-in was also emotional. It made me think of what happened that day.

Around 70 people came to the party on Friday night (the book party that actually had books). It was great to see everyone, especially two of the people whose stories appear in "Beyond the Bullet"

Close Call

So it's the Wednesday day before the book party on Friday and I get a phone call from the trucking company. Thinking they're trying to schedule a delivery time I excitedly answer my phone - only to find out that the truck carrying 10 boxes of books had jack knifed somewhere outside Salt Lake City.

After a minor panic attack we figure out that a freight company can get 8 of the boxes to Portland by Friday morning. They arrive but several of them are damaged and we don't accept delivery of 4 boxes. But at least we have 4 boxes that are okay - and we have books for a book party. Phew.

It's almost done

Got a final proof of the book today. It's wild to see the stories and photos in this format - they were compelling stories when I taped and transcribed them, but seeing them in book form with Kathy's photos brings everything together.

Looking forward to the launch party on April 10!
